A Manhattan walking itinerary

First posted April 25, 2014.

Tourist season is upon us. If you live in NYC, that means you’ll soon have friends and relatives coming in for the weekend and sleeping on your couch. Some of them have spent time in New York and just want to see you, but I guarantee you’ll have at least one visitor per year who hasn’t visited before – and if you don’t live in New York and are reading this, that visitor might be you.

You can always go back through back entries of this blog when looking for ideas (check out my “things to do” tag!). But in this post and a few others, I’ll outline some sample itineraries for a day with friends who want to explore the city. Because most of my visitors are twenty-somethings on a budget, most of my suggestions are free – though there are a lot of stores are on this itinerary, so remember to bring enough money for some small souvenirs! If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday evening, swing by the free hours at the Morgan Library & Museum. Grab some finger food at their café or have some sandwiches at the Pret around the corner before heading to bed early to rest up for a busy Saturday!

Cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Last summer I made my first visit to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden with my dad, and this weekend, while my dad was taking part in the Great Saunter (which he finished! 32 miles in 12 hours), I took my mom to see the cherry blossoms.

Walking NYC

My favorite New York City activity is back, and no, for once I don’t mean going to the theater. I’m talking about walking everywhere. I shared a few photos recently, taken on my first spring rambles, but what I’m most enjoying is being able to, once again, reliably use my feet as a method of transportation.

Photos of Spring

I spent a few hours this weekend outside. I know, I should’ve spent the WHOLE weekend outside, but I got a little caught up in migrating this blog over and, well, time got away from me. It was gorgeous out, and I think (knock wood!) that the spring weather is finally here to stay. I was optimistic enough to buy sunscreen when I was in Rite Aid the other day!

I’ve been trying to take my new (to me) DSLR camera out with me when I have time to ramble around. I still have a ton to learn! I’m really excited to be taking a beginner’s photography class next month so that I can actually learn about aperture and f-stops and exposure – all things I probably learned in my high school photography class, with regular SLR cameras and film, but which I’ve forgotten over the last decade.

Reading about New York

First posted March 19, 2014.

Most of the nonfiction I read falls into the memoir category, with an emphasis on travel. But one of my favorites is Anne Fadiman’s Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader, a book for book lovers. If you haven’t read it, buy it now. It’s short and you’ll read it so quickly you’ll wish it were longer. I’ve read it a couple times and love all of the essays, but one of my favorites is called “My Odd Shelf”.

Getting places on time in NYC

How to handle lateness in NYC? With Patience.

I was late to brunch on Saturday. I’d left my apartment with plenty of time to get to my friend’s neighborhood, pick up some apple cider, and show up on her doorstep, but I wasn’t paying attention when I got on the train and only realized I’d messed up when it started going across the Manhattan Bridge. Oops!
