Blogiversary #2 – two years of blogging

This time of year is all about life anniversaries for me. I moved to New York five years ago and started my first job a few days later. Not quite two years later I changed jobs within my company, and about a year later – two years ago today – I started this blog.

TWO YEARS AGO. I remember thinking that summer, hey, I need to write more, I should start a blog. And I wrote some sample posts to get out ahead of myself – yeah, that doesn’t happen anymore – and then on September 7, 2013, I put up my first post. I was still figuring out what I wanted to do with my blog, what exactly I wanted to write about, but I knew I wanted to show you all a bit of what New York is to me. I’ve tried to both open a window on what life is like here, for those of you who are far away, and to make suggestions of things to do for those of you who are here, by sharing what I’ve enjoyed.

Coming soon: Square Dancing in Bryant Park

Mark your calendars for the weekend of September 25-27: square dancing is coming back to Bryant Park! It’s on their calendar so it must be true, and since unlike most of the things I post about, this is a time-sensitive activity, I figured three weeks notice was only fair. That’s plenty of time to get excited, and to figure out which of your friends you might be able to convince to go with you. There are three nights of dancing — Friday 9/25, Saturday 9/26, and Sunday 9/27, all from 6 till 9.

A long weekend in Maine

So apparently a long weekend in Maine is a thing New Yorkers do in the summertime. I knew this, vaguely, from the five summers I’ve been here, but it really became clear this month. Once I was planning a trip to Maine, I started noticing other people were going there too – from NYC bloggers I follow to several of my coworkers.

The Broadway Princess Party and missing things in NYC

So I missed the Broadway Princess Party at 54 Below. I have my excuse ready: I was out of town, and even if I’d been in town, the tickets were pretty pricey. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t bummed when I realized I couldn’t go, because let’s face it, I am a Broadway nerd who was raised on Disney, and princess songs are in my blood. My friend calls Alan Menken her first voice teacher, and it is so, so true. This princess party was hosted by Laura Osnes, who won a Tony for her turn as Cinderella on Broadway. She’d left the show by the time I saw it, but she sounded like the perfect host for an evening of Broadway women singing princess songs.

The Wiz at SummerStage

I went to see “The Wiz: A Celebration of Music and Dance” on Wednesday at SummerStage, and it was fabulous. If you haven’t read my interview with Danni Gee, the SummerStage curator for this production, check it out for a little more background.

From the minute my friend and I arrived at Rumsey Playfield we could tell that people were excited for this special event, a true celebration of the fortieth anniversary of The Wiz on Broadway. The show was hosted by choreographer George Faison and Phylicia Rashad, a munchkin from the original cast, and when George Faison came out on the stage to open the evening, he was greeted like a rock star, with cheers and a standing ovation.

Walking the Hudson Greenway

First posted November 15, 2013. Updated with new text and new pictures!

Sometimes I forget that Manhattan is an island. This is because I rarely see the water. Plenty of New York is surrounded by beautiful water, and the closest I usually get to it is when I take an express train over a bridge and get a quick glance from the window. This is a shame.

A few summers ago I discovered the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, and while I haven’t taken advantage of it nearly often enough, I’m glad to know it’s there. According to Wikipedia the Greenway is 32 miles long. The part I’m most familiar with runs along the Hudson, and all along this cyclist/pedestrian path you can find green spaces that face the Hudson River.
