NYC marathon – Sunday, November 1, 2015

I took a break from writing last week because I was dealing with a nasty cold. It isn’t quite gone yet, but it’s on the way out, thank goodness — I can’t be sick next weekend. Why? Well, it’s Halloween, and I have plans to bake a lot of delicious things, but you don’t have to be in NYC to enjoy Halloween.

You do have to be in NYC, though, to enjoy the NYC marathon, which is happening next Sunday! I’ve made it a point to go out and cheer on the runners every year that the marathon has been run since I moved to NYC, and I plan to be out there this year, too!

Prospect Park weekend

I didn’t get in enough park time over the summer. I was on the go too much to wander over to the park and meander down paths or sit in the grass. I had a picnic at one point, but it was a planned get-together with friends, not a spontaneous decision to get out and enjoy the summer weather.

And let’s be real — I’m not the biggest fan of real summer weather. Sitting in the park when it’s 85+ degrees out is only tolerable in the shade, and let’s forget taking a walk. So the best time to enjoy Prospect Park (and really? the best time of year, period) is fall. Not too hot, not too cold, and before long the leaves will be changing color.

The Morgan Library & Museum

I snuck in under the wire last Friday to see the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland exhibit at the Morgan Library & Museum before it closed yesterday. If you missed it, don’t feel too bad – there’s also an Alice exhibit at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts from now till mid January which sounds pretty cool. It’s the 150th anniversary of the book’s publication, which seems like a pretty good reason to put on some shows to me!

But as neat as the Alice exhibit was, the real star of any visit to the Morgan Library is the Morgan Library, so if you haven’t gone before, I highly recommend making a trip. Friday nights are busy, but for a good reason: from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., admission is free!

Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Black Tie Ball after party

Remember last week when I told you I was invited to check out the Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Black Tie Ball after party? It was an after party for a gala honoring former mayor Michael R. Bloomberg that served as a fundraiser for my beloved Brooklyn Bridge Park. Well, the party was last night, and it was a ton of fun! The weather was beautiful — I was glad I had my sweater and wore tights but otherwise it was super comfortable and wonderful to be outside. And the fundraiser brought in $1,000,000 for the park — such a win for a space that hosts so many fabulous free events!

I was able to bring a friend of mine as my plus one, so we arrived a little before the party started and hung out on the pier, looking at the gorgeous sky line. I took some photos but didn’t manage to get a good one of one of my favorite moments of the night: spotting a few paper lanterns floating up into the sky and across the water toward Manhattan.

Hamilton Broadway musical – review and discussion

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, or have talked to me in real life, you know that I’ve been a tiny bit obsessed with a new musical called Hamilton, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also stars in the show as Alexander Hamilton. The show’s premise? The life (and death) of founding father Alexander Hamilton, told through a variety of musical styles (from Broadway to hip-hop, with a whole lot of other influences and a ton of references), performed by a diverse cast.

If you live here in NYC, Hamilton has become ubiquitous — everyone is talking about it. The show ran at the Public Theater, off-Broadway, this winter into spring, and opened on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theater this summer. I bought tickets to see the show at the Public way back in December, and in early March, just before seeing it, I bought tickets to see it on Broadway in August. All of us who have been following the show knew before we saw it that something special was happening here.

Top 5 reasons I know it’s fall (and a recipe)

5. The calendar told me so.
4. I wore jeans and a sweater to the park on Sunday and I was still a little cold.
3. My television shows are back.
2. I saw an actual pumpkin on someone’s front stoop.
1. I baked chocolate chip cookies from scratch for no reason on Saturday.

My apartment stayed fairly cool this whole summer (don’t ask me how, that wasn’t true the last two summers) but I still didn’t do much baking. When I did, it usually involved pre-made cookie dough that I’d bought to eat and then baked after convincing myself I really shouldn’t eat ALL of it. So when I got the urge on Saturday to bake, I picked up some supplies and whipped up the delicious chocolate chip cookies you see above.
