Central Park memories

I don’t spend a lot of time in Central Park. It’s far away, there are tons of tourists, and it’s not always possible to find a quiet spot to enjoy nature, since, like I said, tons of tourists. Mostly when I want to hang out in a big park, I head to Prospect Park — closer and quieter.

But Central Park is the first thing I loved about New York City as a kid. I had at least one Central Park-themed calendar along the way, and on visits to the city I would always want to visit. It’s just so BIG and after walking around the city, it’s so green. I loved the boulders every kid ever wants to scramble around on, even before they showed up in an episode of Doctor Who. My only memory from when my dad ran the NYC marathon is of waiting in Central Park for him when it was all over.

Union Square Greenmarket

It was a pretty quiet Memorial Day weekend for me – exactly what I needed after a hectic May! My apartment is grateful for it too, it’s a lot cleaner than it was before, just in time for houseguests to arrive this week. I did get out a little on Saturday to see “Pitch Perfect 2” (tons of fun, made me want to see the first one again!) and on my way to the theater I stopped to get snacks at the Union Square Greenmarket.

Live music in NYC

I had an insane social schedule last week – six evening commitments in seven days – but the week wound down with two nights of live music, which were both lovely. The first was another show in Jason Robert Brown’s residency at Subculture, this time featuring Shoshana Bean, Chris Jackson, and Morgan Karr. The second was a small informal piano concert in my friend’s apartment building with performances by a number of friends. And then this week I attended my choir’s cabaret (which I sang in last spring) to cheer on my choir buddies.

Life in the city

I’ve discovered that carrying a camera around can be addictive. I took this photo on Friday night while walking from dinner to a show with my friend, and I definitely stopped and started taking the shot and fiddling with my camera and had to apologize for not paying attention to either the story she was telling or where we were walking. (I did apologize, right? Sorry!) But as I’ve said before, now that I’m training myself to look for interesting shots, I’m noticing them — and if my camera is out already, well, I have to stop and take a picture.

A Manhattan walking itinerary

First posted April 25, 2014.

Tourist season is upon us. If you live in NYC, that means you’ll soon have friends and relatives coming in for the weekend and sleeping on your couch. Some of them have spent time in New York and just want to see you, but I guarantee you’ll have at least one visitor per year who hasn’t visited before – and if you don’t live in New York and are reading this, that visitor might be you.

You can always go back through back entries of this blog when looking for ideas (check out my “things to do” tag!). But in this post and a few others, I’ll outline some sample itineraries for a day with friends who want to explore the city. Because most of my visitors are twenty-somethings on a budget, most of my suggestions are free – though there are a lot of stores are on this itinerary, so remember to bring enough money for some small souvenirs! If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday evening, swing by the free hours at the Morgan Library & Museum. Grab some finger food at their café or have some sandwiches at the Pret around the corner before heading to bed early to rest up for a busy Saturday!

Washington Square Park

My very first post on this blog, back in September 2013, was about sitting in Washington Square Park. It’s such a New York place in my mind, a mix of locals and tourists, a gathering place, a people-watching spot.
