I’m not feeling very wordy this week – might be the fact that I still haven’t adjusted to the time change. The darkness at the end of the day is the worst, I feel like it’s time for bed hours before I should.

So forgive me if I keep this post short. Hopefully I’ll have more to say later on.

But right now, here’s this. Remember that little basil kit I mentioned I got at that after party a few weeks back? Looked like this, and is apparently called a MakersKit?

Last weekend I finally potted it and watered it. My timing was not the best — I was having people over later and the rocks you have to use had a strong sulphur smell — but I did it! The other day I was not in a great mood – the dark day wasn’t helping – and I glanced down into the jar and saw these tiny little basil sprouts.

It’ll be a while still before I can add fresh basil to my tomato sauce, but seeing those green seedlings put me in a much better mood. I can’t control the weather, or really pretty much anything else in life, but I put some seeds in a jar and watered them and now I have a basil plant.

There are going to be other days like that this winter (and probably every winter), and I’ll figure out other ways to make them better, but for now, I’m going to focus on keeping that little basil plant alive and growing. Something tells me that if I do, every time I look at it, I’ll smile.

It’s worth remembering to water it.
